Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette was born at Chavaniac, Auvergne, in 1757, to an old, illustrious family of the provincial and military nobility. French mathematician, physicist, astronomer and politician. François Arago contributed to major discoveries concerning electromagnetism, light polarisation and velocity, the meridian arc length of the earth, and the standardisation of the metric system.
